Smart sun care: What really works in sunscreens

Among the many available sunscreen options, three ingredients consistently stand out for their proven reliability across formulations and skin types.

Zinc oxide: the gold standard

Zinc oxide is considered the gold standard for sun protection, offering broad-spectrum defence against both UVA and UVB rays. This mineral-based ingredient acts as a physical barrier, forming an invisible shield that reflects radiation away from the skin.

What makes zinc oxide exceptional is its gentle nature and stability. Unlike chemical filters that might irritate sensitive skin, zinc oxide is well tolerated by individuals with rosacea, post-treatment sensitivity, or reactive skin. It is so safe that paediatric dermatologists recommend it for babies and young children. Its photostability also ensures long-lasting protection in the sun, although reapplication every two hours remains necessary.

Titanium dioxide: the reliable companion

Often paired with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide also offers broad-spectrum protection by reflecting UV rays. Thanks to micronised particles, it forms a lightweight barrier that feels comfortable on the skin, making it a popular choice in makeup products with built-in SPF. Its versatility ensures reliable sun protection without sacrificing cosmetic elegance.

Octinoxate: the chemical absorber

Octinoxate is a chemical filter that absorbs UVB rays and converts them into harmless heat. While effective when used with UVA-blocking ingredients, it has raised environmental concerns, especially about coral reef health. Consequently, reef-safe alternatives are becoming more popular, though octinoxate is still a common ingredient in many products.

Informed choices for healthy skin

Understanding what goes into sunscreen empowers consumers to select products that meet both their skin’s requirements and environmental principles. With zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and octinoxate at the forefront, the future of sun protection is characterised by science, safety, and more ingenious skincare.
