Atang Tshikare\u2019s Moy\u00e0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atang Tshikare returns to Johannesburg with Moy\u00e0, meaning both \u201cair\u201d and \u201cspirit\u201d. Looking at the tension between visible order and invisible chaos \u2014 the structured world we move through versus the unseen ancestral, emotional, and spiritual forces shaping human transformation. The works suggest that enlightenment comes through engaging with this unseen space rather than avoiding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe exhibition unfolds as a kind of metaphysical ecosystem where sculpture, shadow, space, and elevation work together as one interconnected environment. Birds appear as ancestral messengers and spiritual intermediaries, representing guidance, healing, prayer, divination, and communal protection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tshikare, a multi-hyphenate designer, artist  base din Cape Town, but he was born in Bloemfontein in 1980. he was influenced from a young age by his father, Mogorosi Motshumi, an anti-Apartheid activist and illustrator for various pan-African publications and art magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you know his work, come for the material brilliance. If you don\u2019t, come to meet one of the most original sculptors working on the continent today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sasha Hartslief\u2019s <\/strong>The Quiet Hour<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In The Quiet Hour, Cape-based painter Sasha Hartslief offers the perfect counter point: radical quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Enuma Okoro wrote in the Financial Times: She employs deft brushstrokes in muted tones to create atmospheres where light and shadow play off one another, tenderly capturing moments plucked from daily life. Moments that remind us of the inherent complexity of living with ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Her figures, mostly women readings, bathing, daydreaming, caught in the shafts of light, are rarely aware of the viewer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy paintings always begin with light \u2014 how it enters a room and captures a moment,\u201d says Sasha. \u201cI paint ordinary scenes caught in the act of being ordinary: people in rooms, unaware, doing nothing remarkable. Each window holds its own enclosed world. I am drawn to that separation and to the moments in between the important events of our lives- when we are waiting and nothing is happening, and the room carries on telling its own story.  The subject matter is less important to me than what the light conveys \u2014 the mood a particular colour creates, whether it is a brilliant warm afternoon yellow, a calm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018The Quiet Hour\u2019 is that liminal time between 3 to 5pm, when the house sighs and light turns honeyed. In a loud and scrolling world, Hartslief\u2019s paintings reward slow looking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lorienne Lotz\u2019s <\/strong>Uncommon Sense<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Tshikare gives us spirit and Hartslief gives us stillness, Lorienne Lotz gives us the beautifully absurd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy work explores questions of truth, power and oppression in an increasingly post-truth world. I am interested in the absurdities and contradictions of the human condition and in the ways the political and personal inevitably become intertwined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Born in Bulawayo Zimbabwe; Lotz currently lives and works in Cape Town but is bringing her latest exhibition Uncommon Sense in Joburg. Inspired by a world that feels increasingly fractured, like Alice in Wonderland, she finds herself \u201cnavigating a landscape in which familiar structures no longer hold, where perspective shifts constantly and any fixed point of reference becomes elusive.\u201d But, unlike Wonderland, there is no waking up from this dream (or nightmare?); just the we need to live with and through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
