{"id":1705,"date":"2026-07-30T07:31:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T07:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/evah-online.com\/?p=1705"},"modified":"2026-07-30T12:06:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T12:06:46","slug":"kanye-nawe-a-homecoming-in-full-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/evah-online.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/30\/kanye-nawe-a-homecoming-in-full-force\/","title":{"rendered":"Kanye Nawe \u2013 a homecoming in full force"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After years of commanding the world\u2019s most prestigious stages, including Tate Modern, Venice Biennale, Gropius Bau and receiving the 2026 Hasselblad Award, Zanele Muholi has come home \u2013 and is taking over the whole house.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kanye Nawe, meaning \u201cwith you\u201d, \u201calongside you\u201d or more broadly \u201coneness\u201d in isiZulu, occupies the entirety of Southern Guild in the Silo District. In view until 18 September 2026, the exhibition couldn\u2019t have happened at a more timely moment &#8211; It coincides the 20th anniversary of Muholi&#8217;s seminal <em>Faces and Phases<\/em> project, 20 years since South Africa\u2019s Civil Union Act legalised same-sex marriage, and the 30th anniversary of South Africa&#8217;s Constitution. And the scope of the exhibition reflects this \u2013 photography, sculpture and film spanning more than two decades of visual activism, presented in one living archive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curators initially translated Kanye Nawe literally but Muholi corrected them by singing \u201cKanye nawe, Nkosi yami\u201d \u2013 a gospel hymn known to generations of Black mothers in mourning and joy. It represents a cry of surrender, faith, and divine companionship through life&#8217;s trials and triumphs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That anecdote is the key to the whole exhibition. Visitors will walk through landmark bodies that have redefined contemporary art.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Faces and Phases (2006 \u2013 present):<\/strong> Now 20 years old, the ongoing portrait series began as a direct response to the violence, discrimination and invisibility faced by Black LGBTQIA+ South Africans. Hundreds of tender, frontal portraits assert existence as resistance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Only Half the Picture, Being, Mo(u)rning, LiZa, and ZaVa<\/strong>: Early series that documented trauma (including hate crime scenes and funderals, but also intimacy. Family, pregnancy, love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Somnyama Ngonyama (Hail the Dark Lioness):<\/strong> The internationally acclaimed self-portrait series where Muholi becomes image and author.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three large-scale bronze sculptures extend Muholi&#8217;s exploration of memory, spirituality, ancestry, and survival into three dimensions. Monumental, tactile and ancestral, the bronzes examines vulnerability, protection and strength.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cUltimately, Muholi\u2019s oeuvre is driven by a commitment to asserting the enduring visibility of Black Queer existance. Now entering its third decade, this evolving practice continues to build a lasting testament to the communities it honours. The full spectrum of&nbsp;<em>Kanye Nawe<\/em>&nbsp;emerges by folding inward in&nbsp;<em>Somnyama Ngonyama&nbsp;<\/em>(\u201cI am with myself\u201d), turning toward intimacy and kinship in&nbsp;<em>Only Half the Picture<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Being, Mo(u)rning,&nbsp;<\/em>and<em>&nbsp;ZaVa&nbsp;<\/em>(\u201cI am with you\u201d), and expanding into collective solidarity in&nbsp;<em>Faces and Phases<\/em>&nbsp;(\u201cWe are here together\u201d).
