My week-long drive with the Omoda C5 1.5T 230T Lux X was exceptional. Listen, some cars you simply drive, and others have a way of driving you.
Nice to meet you
The moment I approached the C5, I was captivated. Its diamond-pattern grille combined with T-shaped LED daytime running lights gives it a futuristic yet mischievous appearance. The sloping roofline and bold curves suggest speed even while stationary, while the 18-inch alloys subtly convey authority.
And then there’s the colour options; mine is sleek metallic grey. It’s one of those cars that makes people glance twice, maybe even thrice. There’s confidence in its stance and a nearly playful flirtation in the way the golden sunlight catches its curves.
Power that whispers
I opened the bonnet to reveal the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine. It delivers 115kW of eager power and 230Nm of torque, all sent through a silky CVT (continuously variable transmission). Over my week of testing, I realised the C5 isn’t shy about performance. It slips into effortless acceleration, whether in Sport or Eco mode.

Open it, and suddenly the cabin feels more spacious, freeing and vibrant. It’s the kind of detail that makes you want to take detours, to enjoy the wind and sunshine.
A thirsty companion
Every romance has its caveats, and for the C5, it’s fuel consumption. While the claimed 6.9L/100km sounds impressive on paper, my daily commutes and weekend adventures actually pushed the fuel consumption closer to 10.5L/100km. So, if you’re considering making this your daily driver, keep the fuel costs in mind.
It’s worth every penny
At R426 000, the Omoda fits within the premium compact SUV segment. When considering its technology, comfort and undeniable appeal, it appears to be a worthwhile investment. This is one of those cars where the price not only covers metal and wheels but also the driving experience.
Seven days, countless secrets
After seven days behind the wheel, I can confidently say this: the Omoda C5 1.5T 230T Lux X knows how to keep you intrigued. Tight corners, highway merges and rainy afternoon drives all became my little adventures.
So, yes, it may consume more petrol than I’d like if driven daily, but it offers confidence, comfort and a kind of thrill that turns even ordinary commutes into playful, memorable encounters with the open road.
